Is your lighter flame weak or sputtering? This guide walks you through common causes and simple fixes, from fuel issues to flint problems.
Quick Answer
A weak lighter flame usually means low fuel, a clogged nozzle, or a worn flint. Diagnose the symptom to apply the right fix.
Common Causes of a Weak Flame
Before you start troubleshooting, understand the most frequent culprits. A weak flame that flickers or sputters often points to an air bubble in the fuel line or a partially blocked gas jet. A flame that is consistently small but steady usually means the fuel level is low. If the flame is yellow and smoky, the air mixture is off, often from a dirty burner. These issues are common with both disposable and refillable lighters.
If your lighter is a Wokeface / Higher Self Lighter, remember these are high-quality full-size Bic lighters. They are not designed to be refilled, so fuel issues typically mean it's time for a replacement. The hand-painted nature of these lighters does not affect the internal mechanism, so cosmetic variations won't cause a weak flame.
Diagnose & Fix Your Lighter Flame
- Symptom: Flame is very small or non-existent: Check the fuel level. For a disposable lighter like the Wokeface, listen for the slosh of liquid butane. If it's silent, the lighter is empty. For a refillable lighter, hold it upside down and listen. No sound means it's out of fuel. If empty and disposable, replace the lighter. If refillable, proceed to refuel.
- Symptom: Flame flickers or sputters: This often means an air bubble in the fuel line. For a refillable lighter, hold it upright and let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Then, try to light it again. If the issue persists, the nozzle might be clogged. Use a can of compressed air to blow out the jet. If a refillable lighter still sputters after sitting, the jet is likely clogged and needs cleaning.
- Symptom: Flame is yellow and smoky: This indicates an improper air-to-fuel mixture, often from a dirty burner. For a refillable lighter, use a small brush or toothpick to gently clean the burner area. Avoid using water or liquid cleaners. If cleaning the burner doesn't fix the yellow flame, the lighter may have a manufacturing defect and should be replaced.
- Symptom: No spark or weak spark: This is a flint issue. For a refillable lighter, remove the flint spring and check the flint. If it's worn down to a tiny nub, replace it. If there is no flint at all, insert a new one. For a disposable lighter, there is no user-replaceable flint. If the flint is gone or worn out, replace it. If the spark is still weak after a new flint, the spark wheel may be worn, and the lighter should be replaced.
Product Facts
- Wokeface / Higher Self Lighter: Each lighter has the Wokeface logo on one side and Higher Self (our now-closed Portland Oregon HQ shop) logo on the other. This is a collectible, disposable lighter. Do not attempt to refill it; a weak flame means it's simply out of fuel and needs to be replaced.
